Semuc Champey

Semuc Champey is located 76 km from Coban, in a valley with a high slope, surrounded by a tropical rainforest. It has a natural bridge 300 meters long, over which there are pools or ponds of various shapes and sizes of crystal clear water from springs, with depths of 1 to 4 meters. The river Cahabón runs below this natural bridge. At the end of the bridge, the water falls down to the river, forming a waterfall about 15 meters high. For its natural beauty it was declared a National Park in 1956. In 1970 it was declared the National Monument and in 1.997 was declared by presidential agreement a CULTURAL HERITAGE.

Biotopo

For the ancient Mayas, birds were an integral part of daily life. They used to collect the bird´s feathers and birds were considered messengers of the gods who traveled between the super natural world and the world of men. Quetzal feathers were used as money and only the nobility could use it in their dress. Their feathers were removed only from live birds. Since the quetzal was so valuable to the Maya, any person who killed a quetzal was punished with death.
